In our opinion, an extremely valuable and often unseen element of Social Media is the ability to keep businesses honest, and perhaps remind them that people do care about their values and want to feel connected to them in some way beyond the immediate product or service that they sell. As we’ve done research on different consumer groups and their online behaviour as well as their spending or purchasing habits, it has become clear that Millenials and Generation Y are incredibly different to their predecessors. No longer are they as sensitive to cost as previous generations were, having more access to disposable income than their parents and grandparents ever did, but they are much more concerned about where products come from, the environmental impact of businesses and what they are doing to contribute to the environment and to sustainability of the earth’s resources, to name just a few. As businesses become more aware of this, they should begin to consider these elements of their businesses and spend more time on communicating this authentically and effectively to their audience, via Social Media and their other messaging channels.
As we interact and observe online with more and more of our clients as well as within our own businesses, we realise with growing conviction that the power of online tools will not be a replacement for Word of Mouth but rather a tool to exponentialise it. As small businesses, building a following on Social Media takes time and resources which you may not have in large quantities so the most important thing is to just DO YOU and do it well, and seek help from professionals when you need it. A year from now, you will look back and be amazed by what you’ve achieved, the trick is to just GET STARTED!
