A social media strategy is essentially an outline of what you plan to do on your platforms and the goals that you want to achieve through social media.
This plan should be made up of actions that will set you on the path to achieving your goals. Whether you love social media or find it rather daunting, a strategy serves to keep you on track and is a benchmark that shows you whether you are missing the mark or nailing it!
Besides helping you to meet your marketing goals and stay on track, one of the most important reasons you need a social media strategy is consistency. Consistency is key! When the quality of your content and posting is not consistent, it can confuse your audience and it is one of the main reasons that pages don’t grow on social media. Maintaining a consistent strategy helps you to build trust, credibility and reputation with your audience.
Implementing a social media strategy will also save you time. Creating a calendar with your marketing goals and plans for each month is great, but a strategy should go even further to planning your posts. The stress of scrambling to put a post together on the day can be overwhelming and planning allows you to get as creative as possible before the post goes live.
Don’t forget to stay flexible and creative. Planning is necessary but social media is also about sharing real-time moments. Live videos and stories on Instagram and Facebook are a great way to connect with your audience and share content that is in line with your strategy but also current.
Your social media strategy goals must match your business and overall marketing goals. Do you want to increase brand awareness, increase sales or gain more leads? Whatever you would like to achieve, make sure you set S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals that you can track. There are many free and paid social media analytical tools that you can use to gain insights and track your pages’ performance.
Narrow down your target audience. You want to be as specific as possible in this stage of your planning. Consider things like age, gender, location, average income, pain points and interests. Doing this will help you to tailor your content to what your audience likes. Creating social media content takes time and a lot of creativity, so you want to make sure you are communicating to the right people.
Competitor analysis is also a crucial part in creating a strategy. Choose a few of your top competitors and have a look at what they are doing on their platforms. You may even spot some opportunities that you can take advantage of.
This year we chose to create a theme for each month consisting of both relevant content and exciting real-time snippets of Lamb life. The theme that we are most excited about is our November theme which is all about conquering fears. We wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise for you, so you will have to keep your eyes on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
Besides making our platforms look cool, having a social media strategy has helped us stay consistent, create content that is relevant to our audience, grow our presence and kept us from quietly frankly going crazy! And we are confident that a great social media strategy can do the same for you!
